She carefully follows the instructions not to let go of the camera with her eyes (the film shows recurring close-ups of camera lenses with blurred, interchangeable men behind them), and ends by posting a picture on Instagram with the hashtag type #fuckjantelagen. Bella is in L, A, to become a porn movie star, and this is just the very first step on the road.
Many films have been made with a young girl who comes to the big city to "make it", usually in showbiz. Whatever the career, it is often the moral of the moment that the higher up on the success ladder you go, the more you have to sacrifice and the more cynical you become. It is difficult to reach the top without getting your hands dirty. However, few films have been made in the porn industry, a world that feature film debut director Ninja Thyberg has carefully explored since her award-winning short film version from 2013.
In addition to Kappel, who plays Linnéa, aka Bella Cherry, the actors consist of real players in the porn industry. When Bella moves into the apartment with the other young porn film aspirants, it is Joy (Revika Anne Reustle) who becomes her friend and confidant. They do castings together and Joy confidently rattles off everything she can imagine doing in front of the camera, while Bella wants to wait with anal sex, for example.
When they are with the photographer and the new Spiegler girl Ava (Evelyn Claire) takes a picture of Bella without asking first, Joy says that no one takes pictures without paying. Joy instructs Bella how to pose in front of the camera and in the car home they laugh at Ava's attitude that she is not there to meet friends but to work. Agent Spiegler's girls are the highest paid in the industry and the most famous and respected - becoming a Spiegler girl is equal to guaranteed success - you work every day but have to stand up for everything! Bella laughs but a seed has been sown…
The film's treasure (apart from the shock value which in itself will give guaranteed hype - sex sells as it is said, especially when it is like this "room clean" wrapped in an indie film) are the natural actor performances! While "Boogie Nights" has been Hollywood-adapted, "Pleasure" is filmed in almost documentary simplicity (which, however, does not mean haphazard film photography - the scenes are nicely filmed from the dull apartment complex to the luxury villas where the porn recordings take place).
